Pistachio Olive Oil Cake

Pistachio Olive Oil Cake

Two things were behind the inspiration to bake an olive oil cake a few weeks ago. One was Pistachio flourthe purchase of Italian pistachio powder from Buon Italia in Chelsea Market (New York). Ever since the first time I walked into that store I'd searched for products I could fly home and put to good use.

Hank Shaw, the blogger responsible for Hunter Angler Gardener Cook, has got to be a busy man. There are a lot of good blogs out there, but his work (and that of his photog wife, Holly) is consistently top-notch. Rarely do I visit his site and not learn something - or make ambitious plans to do more than I'm already doing.

Well, I already had the oven heated and the pans out, so after making the lemon almond cake I decided to give an olive oil cake a try too. This one came from Gina DePalma, the pastry chef at Babbo, via Caviar and Codfish, an excellent blog.

First Potatoes

Russian Banana Fingerlings

Well folks, the Russian Banana Fingerlings (that were substituted for Swedish Peanut) have arrived! We had a single broken plant thanks to wind or a cat or something, so we decided to dig up the potatoes for that plant to see how things looked. What a surprise when we harvested about 20 absolutely perfect, beautiful little spuds! No blemishes, no bugs - some were still spudlets, but some were pretty good sized. We put them into the ground at the beginning of April and now we have potatoes. We'll wait another week before pulling up more, just to give them a little time to get larger.
