Homemade Dog Biscuits
I used to make dog biscuits about once a year but I got out of the habit when our less-finicky dog Lucy came along. She'll eat nearly anything meant for a dog, so I never bothered to get extra fancy treats for her. But this holiday I forgot to get her something special, so I decided to make her homemade biscuits that she could share with her doggie pals Mars and Biscuit.
After so much baking the last few months, I had plenty of good bread-making supplies and simply added dried parsley to a basic biscuit recipe for some added bad breath assist. These are incredibly easy to make, and they'll take variation well if you don't have some of these ingredients. This is a dry, crunchy biscuit that will keep for a long time in an airtight container, provided you dry them out well.
Crunchy Parsley Biscuits
2 tsp dry active yeast
1/2 c warm water
2 c warm water (you can use beef or chicken broth, but make sure it's low sodium)
1/2 c powdered milk
1/4 c butter or margarine, melted
1/4 c honey
1 egg, beaten
2 c AP flour
1 c cornmeal
3 c cracked wheat
1/4 - 1/2 c dried parsley
4 c whole wheat flour
- Preheat the oven to 350F.
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water.
- In a large bowl, combine the water, powdered milk, margarine, honey, and egg.
- Add the bubbling yeast mixture and mix well.
- Stir in the flour, cornmeal, cracked wheat and parsley until all ingredients are moistened.
- Add the whole wheat flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing well each time. Add 3 cups this way.
- Add the final amount of whole wheat flour while kneading the dough.
- Knead 4 - 5 minutes or until the dough is not sticky. Add as much flour as you need to accomplish this without drying out the dough.
- Divide the dough into smaller chunks and roll out each to 1/2" thickness.
- Cut with a cookie cutter (any shape).
- Place the cut cookies on parchment paper and place in the oven for 15 - 20 minutes, or until the cookies are set.
Note: These will not spread at all. You can place them nearly touching on the parchment paper. - Remove from the oven and set aside. Repeat until all biscuits have baked once through.
- Combine all the biscuits on sheet trays and return them to the oven. Turn off the oven and allow the biscuits to cool overnight in the oven. They should be completely dry when they come out the next day.
Yield: About 4lbs (almost 2 gallon zipper bags full)
