Vacationing

Drive About: Ireland

Drive About: Ireland

Last month, we snuck away from sunny summertime Seattle and headed on vacation across the pond, for a few days in London and a week in Ireland. Neither place has been regarded historically as a culinary giant, but that's been changing over the last decade and we had some smashingly good food and drink in both countries.

Our highlight reel includes:

  • Dinner at St. John, just around the corner from the Smithfield Market in London

On the Cherry Bus

On the Cherry Bus

We stepped on the bus at 7:35 in the morning, lattes in hand and cameras in tow. Emma and I had been talking about this cherry trip for weeks, what we hoped we'd see, what we wanted to taste, and how many pounds we wished we'd bring home. We'd had an agenda before we arrived, and it was simple: go to an orchard, have lunch, do a little wine tasting, and visit a fruit packing plant. I figured I might even have time to catch a little nap or do some writing and brainstorming on the ride over. Wrong.

Minetta Crack Pie and I Don't Care

Minetta Crack Pie and I Don't Care

With just around 48 hours in New York City to catch up with my parents and brother and get my big city fix, I'd planned only one meal and one retail stop. What I didn't plan on was everything between.

Day 1: 15+ hours
5:45am - arrived at JFK after a red-eye where I got no shut-eye
6:45am - got to the hotel. Mom and Dad already awake and ready for breakfast
7:15am - ate breakfast at the hotel. Standard fare: cereal, tea, toast

On Location from the Big Island, Part 3

On Location from the Big Island, Part 3

We filled our first five days on the Big Island with plenty of beaches, food, and local color. Hilo was an incredible shift from Kona, and our trip to Kilauea was likely to be that same sort of shift back. Our last three days on the island would bring us to the volcano at last, to the craggy coastlines and deep valleys all over the island, and back to the coral-graffitied lava fields on the Kohala Coast once more.

Day 6: Kilauea
