Zucchini, Tomatillo, and Ancho Chile Chutney

Chutney 2009

A few years ago when we had an abundance of green tomatoes, we made a wonderful chutney that paired really well with meat. This year I turned to the River Cottage Cookbook for a chutney recipe - and found one that used lots of zucchini - something we've had plenty of this year. I made a few modifications from the original based on what I had at hand, and the results turned out great. We grilled some pork chops that night just for a taste test, and this is not to be missed!

Pickling Day!

Garden Harvest

Before leaving town for the weekend, I needed to put up some of our garden's goods. This year has been pretty fruitful in our backyard, and there were pickles and beans ready to can and more zucchini ready to dry.

Hank Shaw, the blogger responsible for Hunter Angler Gardener Cook, has got to be a busy man. There are a lot of good blogs out there, but his work (and that of his photog wife, Holly) is consistently top-notch. Rarely do I visit his site and not learn something - or make ambitious plans to do more than I'm already doing.

Monga's Classic Zucchini Bread

Classic Zucchini Bread

I'm not sure of the origin of zucchini quick bread, but I wonder if it came out of the WWII Victory Gardens. I decided to make zucchini bread this week, so I spent some time looking up old recipes to compare methods and ingredients. There was no mention of zucchini bread (or squash cake, as I have seen it referred to) in anything I have that's older than about 1940. That may be just a coincidence, or the result of my cookbook selection - I'm not sure.
