Rosemary Shortbread Cookies

There are few cookies that surprise people more than rosemary shortbread. Maybe it's because folks associate rosemary with savory food, or they have a giant bush in their garden and it just doesn't look like something you'd put in cookies. Lots of herbs can get lost in the sugar and butter of a shortbread cookie, but rosemary isn't one of them.

These short cookies are excellent to make in large batches and frozen in logs. They are a decadent last-minute dessert and an elegant gift to bring to any party.

This was our first dish from the baby goat we had picked up from Island Family Farm, and we got it just a few days after it went to slaughter. In fact, it had never been refrigerated before, and I don’t know if that had an effect on how tender and juicy the meat was. I roasted this like I would roast a lamb shank – very simply with Mediterranean herbs – and Todd made some wonderful, smoky black lentils and carrots and a garden salad with an orange/lemon vinaigrette.

This recipe came from a great book I got Todd for Christmas - Pork and Sons by Stéphane Reynaud. It's been published by Phaidon - odd for a cookbook - but as soon as you get your hands on it you can tell it's almost more of an art book than it is a cookbook. I saw it for the first time at a design store, and it stood out because of the padded pink gingham that makes up the cover of the book.


First Potatoes

Russian Banana Fingerlings

Well folks, the Russian Banana Fingerlings (that were substituted for Swedish Peanut) have arrived! We had a single broken plant thanks to wind or a cat or something, so we decided to dig up the potatoes for that plant to see how things looked. What a surprise when we harvested about 20 absolutely perfect, beautiful little spuds! No blemishes, no bugs - some were still spudlets, but some were pretty good sized. We put them into the ground at the beginning of April and now we have potatoes. We'll wait another week before pulling up more, just to give them a little time to get larger.
