Rhubarb Rose Bitters

Rhubarb Rose Bitters Ingredients

This bitters recipe is completely original – and is a real experiment. Todd added the essential things to make it bitter, but it will take a little while before we know if the experiment is a success or not!

From our first tastes and smells, the results are wonderful.

Rhubarb Mother

Rhubarb Mother

I've put off starting a sourdough mixture for a long time, and for a lot of reasons. This week, I just didn't have any more excuses. This starter begins with rhubarb from our garden - just another item (like cabbage) that you can use to start a sour mixture.

This method comes from the Fergus Henderson cookbook Beyond Nose to Tail and is the basis of a number of bread recipes in his book. It's my goal to use this starter in a BLT challenge, so I wanted to try it out first.

Cherry Rhubarb Pie

Cherry Rhubarb Pie

After making our Sour Cherry Stout, I had about a pound of leftover sour cherries – not quite enough to make a pie on its own, but too much to ignore. I did a little digging in Rose’s Pie and Pastry Bible and found a cherry rhubarb lattice pie, and I used that as a template for this pie, minus the lattice.

Grape Rhubarb Pie

Grape Rhubarb Pie

We have giant grapevines in the backyard that stretch across nearly the entire fence, and with that comes gallons and gallons of perfectly sweet Concord grapes. I had never even heard of grape pie when Todd had suggested trying one last year – his mother had made one while she was visiting once, and given the abundance and proximity of such great fruit, I decided to give it a try.
