Gateau de Crepes

Gateau de Crepes

I've only had this once, but the memory of it is like a dream. A cold night in New York, walking the Upper East Side with my best friend Tanarra - searching for a bakery whose name I was unsure of. I'd heard of this cake before - layers of crepes separated by vanilla pastry cream, and I heard this place had them. I think we got the last piece that night.

Croquembouche

Croquembouche

For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to go to Paris. My family's full of anglophiles, and dinners were opportunities to discuss the Tudors and Stuarts, Victoriana, and Gilbert and Sullivan. I went the other route, to the east. By the time I graduated college my romantic notions of the place were in full bloom. I'd studied French history, knew my art, and spoke passable book-French. The only thing left to do was go.

Coconut Cream Pie

Coconut Cream Pie

When I was a kid I spent many lunches walking through the Piccadilly Cafeteria line admiring their pies. Southern cafeterias were always well-stocked with good pies, even when the rest of the meal options were just on par. I remember marveling at the sugar beads forming on the tops of chocolate and lemon meringue pies, and loving the smell of nutmeg in their baked custard cups. But their coconut cream pie was something to behold. While the jello parfaits got Cool Whip, the Coconut Cream Pies got the real thing, or at least the real thing from a can.

The September 2009 Daring Bakers' challenge was hosted by Steph of A Whisk and a Spoon. She chose the French treat, Vols-au-Vent based on the Puff Pastry recipe by Michel Richard from the cookbook Baking With Julia by Dorie Greenspan.
