Herbed Vinegars

Herbed Vinegar Ingredients

Our garden is a very happy place for cooking herbs - at least the damp winter-hearty ones like thyme and sorrel. It's usually too damp and cool in our little patch for warm weather herbs. It's like they don't drain enough or ever get warm enough to grow. This summer we planted basil in our new greenhouse - and now we have more than we can eat. The same holds true for purple shiso, which we bought as a young plant at our local farmer's market.

Roasted Baby Goat Leg

Roasted Baby Goat Leg

This was our first dish from the baby goat we had picked up from Island Family Farm, and we got it just a few days after it went to slaughter. In fact, it had never been refrigerated before, and I don’t know if that had an effect on how tender and juicy the meat was. I roasted this like I would roast a lamb shank – very simply with Mediterranean herbs – and Todd made some wonderful, smoky black lentils and carrots and a garden salad with an orange/lemon vinaigrette.

First Potatoes

Russian Banana Fingerlings

Well folks, the Russian Banana Fingerlings (that were substituted for Swedish Peanut) have arrived! We had a single broken plant thanks to wind or a cat or something, so we decided to dig up the potatoes for that plant to see how things looked. What a surprise when we harvested about 20 absolutely perfect, beautiful little spuds! No blemishes, no bugs - some were still spudlets, but some were pretty good sized. We put them into the ground at the beginning of April and now we have potatoes. We'll wait another week before pulling up more, just to give them a little time to get larger.

Early Summer Carrot Soup with Shrimp and Peas

Yummy Carrot Soup

I love the fresh snow peas from the garden, but always end up getting sick of stirfry by the time they are finished. So, here I was trying to come up with another use for them, and also trying to get rid of some of the carrots that were piling up in the fridge. And I think this was one of Todd's best creations--kind of a spring roll in a pot.
