Raw Cauliflower Curry Salad

Raw Cauliflower Curry Salad

Earlier this year we went on a really brief raw diet - I think we lasted all of 10 days. But we handled the whole thing wrong. We started the diet at the beginning of February, which isn't the best time for vegetable options, at least not any that you're going to eat at room temperature (which hovers around 60 in our house). It was also incredibly difficult to get enough calories for me to stay warm, especially at night. We tried to pack in protein with sprouted legumes and lots of nut-based cheese, but it was really too hard for me to stay warm. It was like my bones were made of ice.

Curried Apple Orzo Salad

Curried Apple Orzo Salad

Every family has one of these. You know, dishes that get trotted out anytime there's a picnic or a potluck. Sometimes it involves peas or potatoes, other times mayonnaise. That's what I like so much about this recipe - it's different from all of the usual buffet table fare.

I found this recipe in the food section of the Austin American Statesman when I was in college at UT. It came from Cafe Annie - Robert Del Grande's go-to place in Houston - when Cafe Annie was still relatively young.

Curry Dayz

I think I've lost my mind. I guess between the raw diet and the realization that we weren't moving forward on the house right now, I decided I needed to cook again. We've been getting ready for our trip to Singapore and Indonesia, and I've been reading about roti, curries, and strange Asian desserts - all of those things piquing my appetite for spicy, tangy, and flavorful. I opened the Vikram Vij cookbook we'd bought after our last trip to Vancouver, BC (it was a revelation!) and found a host of recipes I just had to try.

Mussels with Green Curry Sauce

Mussels with Green Curry Sauce

After having a hearty breakfast at the Bay Cafe, we wandered near the smoke shop and fisherman's terminal in Magnolia - it was a beautiful day. We grabbed a couple of pounds of Penn Cove mussels and fixed them up with homemade green curry sauce. Why don't people eat more of these things??
