Apricot Ice Cream Baked Alaska

Apricot Ice Cream Baked Alaska

The picture is one I'd rather forget. I'm standing apart from my friends Leah and Julie, wearing a gypsy-looking skirt and a scowl. I'm about 10 and from the looks of it, fresh into a tantrum. It's a pre-birthday dinner photo-op, and even though I can't remember what I was so pissed about, the memory of dessert sticks in my head like popcorn in my maw. Bananas Foster, my favorite flame-o dessert, likely landed in front of me that night.

Fruit and Nut Bars

Fruit and Nut Bars

With dried sour cherries and toasted hazelnuts on hand, I decided to tackle the Fruit and Nut Bars from Alice Medrich's Cookies and Brownies. The ratios in this recipe are spot-on, so it makes a good chewy bar no matter what kind of nuts or dried fruit you have in your pantry. This mixes up really fast and would be a terrific lunchbox addition, and you could probably even lower the sugar too!

Apricot Lemon Bars

Apricot Lemon Bars

I love lemon bars. I'm definitely one of those people who will pick a lemony dessert over a chocolatey dessert when given the option. I'd never thought to add preserves to a lemon bar before, but this is a perfect combination. The nut crust variation gives these bars an added flavor and texture component that, while not needed, certainly doesn't hurt!

Sometimes the universe sends you hidden messages - other times it just hits you over the head. Serendipity brought me to Twinkies.
